CUMC Chili Dinner this Tuesday!

The Annual Chili Dinner at the Cheverly United Methodist Church (CUMC) is being held Tuesday, January 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Tickets will be sold at the door — $10 for adults and $5.00 for children 4 to 11, and free for children 3 and under. The meal consists of a choice of chili with meat or veggie chili, cornbread, salad, and dessert.
The church building is home to three congregations, and many organizations meet in the church building, including Cheverly Boys and Girls Scouts, the Cheverly Young Actors Guild, Mother's Day Out, Weekday nursery, and Wildflower Yoga .

New Year's Resolutions

I know it's cliche, but I've been thinking a lot about New Year's resolutions. And that got me to thinking about some resolutions that, if I could, I'd make for the town. Here's my short list:

* Obey the speed limits throughout town. 25mph is slower than you think!

* More people actively volunteering in our community. There are so many opportunities to work with your neighbors, whether you're helping to save ecosystems, tutoring and mentoring, bringing fresh food to Cheverly, or helping to plan great community events, there's something everyone can do.

* More civility on the local listservs. We live in a small town, be nice. Enough said.

* Support businesses in Cheverly -- if we do business with a doctor, cleaner, liquor store, or grocery store in town when possible, we might get more and better options eventually. And if you can support your local small businesses (artists, bakers, musicians, etc.), do it. Put your money back into your community!

Those are my big four. What are yours?

Our Aldi's has been open for a few weeks now and it may not be exactly what everyone wanted. Aside from being assaulted with junk food selections as soon as you enter the store and sometimes less than fresh vegetables per a few Cheverly Exchangers, the store serves its purpose for providing convenient, lost-cost food items. We think it is time to take down the 'Space for Lease' sign along Landover Road.

New Raised Crosswalks on 63rd Avenue

Three new raised crosswalks/speed humps have sprouted on the newly repaved 63rd Avenue. Two of the crosswalks are in front of Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary School and the third is in front of St. Ambrose Church at Jason Street. Please slow down so the school kids won't be entertained as your car 'catches some air' and bottoms out in a shower of sparks.

Party at the Legion for New Years Eve!

The American Legion has graciously extended an invitation to all of Cheverly to come by December 31st to help ring in the New Year! The party is from 9 PM to 1 AM New Year's Eve at the Legion, and includes a champagne toast and light finger foods. Additional beverages will be available for purchase at the bar, which is CASH only. Tickets are $10 (cash or check) and available for purchase during the Legion's normal evening operating hours. Tickets are required for admittance and proceeds benefit the Legion (No outside alcohol is permitted).

Cheverly Aldi's Grand Opening!

The new Aldi's ribbon cutting ceremony was held this morning in front of crowd of 50 shoppers. After the introduction of dignitaries and obligatory speeches, the ribbon was cut and the first customers entered after 9AM. The shelves were full of Aldi's name brand items offering a good selection and covering all the basics. There was some confusion over the shopping carts (You need a quarter for a deposit but get it back when you are done shopping and return the cart. Mayor Mike thoughtfully handed out quarters to the crowd before the store opened). As customers left the store, they were handed reusable goody bags which included popcorn, bottled water, trail mix, granola bar, and gummy sharks. Aldi's will be a welcome addition to Cheverly after the closing of the Giant earlier this year.

Pancake Breakfast at Fannon Hall this Sunday!

There will be an Advent Pancake Breakfast from 9:00 am to 12 Noon Sunday (December 18th) at Fannon Hall in St Ambrose Church. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend this yearly event. The menu consists of Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Coffee, and Apple Juice. Prices are $6 per person or $20 for a family of four or more. Children under 3 eat free. Proceeds to benefit the Ladies of Charity.

The Cheverly Planning Board is conducting a survey entitled 'Envision Cheverly' similar to the Envision Prince George's survey conducted earlier this year. The survey is about current and future characteristics of Cheverly and how our residents feel about them.

The Cheverly Planning Board is a volunteer board of citizens appointed by the Cheverly Town Council. The Board serves in an advisory role to the Council on projects and issues related to planning and development. The Planning Board has developed this brief survey to reach out to town groups and individuals and get a sense of what the people of Cheverly would like their community to look and feel like ten to twenty years from now. We feel it is vitally important to have citizen input on what needs are being meet, or not met, by the growth, development, and prioritization of public and private projects in our town.

This survey is not intended to serve as a scientific instrument, but rather to initiate a public conversation about Cheverly's future. Cheverly Community Market's Holiday Market This Saturday!

Cheverly Soccer Club Has a U9 Recreational Team!

Cheverly Soccer Club is organizing a U9 recreational team that will practice and play at the Cheverly Community Building on Sunday afternoons from mid- December through January.

Coach Chico Donelson and Assistant Coach Michelle Russell will be in charge. The first session is Sunday, December 11, from 2:30-3:30pm.

Target ages of players - 8 and 9 year olds, with possibly a few 7s
Practices/games would be held at the Cheverly Community Center gym on Sundays
Tentative dates are: December 11, 18; January 9, 16, 23, and 30

Cheverly Community Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting!

Friday, December 2nd
Starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Cheverly Community Center!
Culminating at 7:45 p.m. at Legion Park

The tree lighting has classically been a Town Council sponsored event. This year we wanted to make some changes to encourage greater participation and a community focus for our Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting. So, we are reorganizing the event around the theme of a Community Celebration of Caring and Sharing.

We are asking everyone to step forward and take the opportunity to give by: Bringing non-perishable food to be given by our Girl Scouts for use by local area food banks. Bring a card of well wishes to be sent to service members overseas. Sign a banner wishing Peace on Earth and add your well wishes and thoughts for this year.

In order to better accommodate families with younger children, we are starting the festivities at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Our neighborhood schools will be singing for us and the CUMC Handbell choir will help us ring in the season.

This year we are offering some new coloring selections to allow our children to showcase their artistic sides as well as an essay opportunity focused on the themes of: “What I like most about Cheverly in the winter” or “My wishes for the New Year”.

The Cheverly Methodist Church will call us all to the tree lighting at Legion Park by ringing their bells at 7:45 p. m. and, at the Community Center we will walk down to Legion Park together where we will have caroling, light the tree and holiday displays and enjoy the warmth and light of our very first Cheverly Yule Log. Please do set aside some time to come together as a Cheverly Family and join in this Community Celebration of Caring and Sharing and, of course, loads of fun!

*If driving, park your cars down by Legion Park and walk up to the Community Center and your car will be ready for you after the tree lighting.

Cheverly Community Market's Annual Thanksgiving Market Is This Saturday!

We're big fans of Cheverly Community Market -- during the season it's our de facto bi-weekly neighborhood coffee shop, fresh food bodega and community group outlet. As the season draws to a close, there are two special annual markets, one of which, Thanksgiving Market, takes place this Saturday from 9:00am to 1:00pm. There are over 25 vendors -- from market regulars such as Shlagel Farm, Simply Sausage, and Cheverly's own Martha's Jams, to wine (Elk Run Vineyards and Cygnus Wine Cellars) to special holiday vendors such as Rose Fennell's Good Earth Pottery, Ann Barsi's Encore Hats by Nonna Farsi and Riverdale's Profusions of Glass. And music by Bolivian musical artist William Pozo-Zarate.

Spotlight: Cheverly Robotics Club

This is the third of an occasional series in which CHVBlog will showcase one of the town's organizations. Previously we visited two of Cheverly's oldest clubs. Now we will focus on some of the newer ones.

The Cheverly Robotics Club meets every Saturday from 12 Noon to 2 PM in the Cheverly Community Center (check the town website to confirm meetings). The club is lead by Councilmember David Thorpe who oversees about a dozen tweens who work on setting up programs to drive Lego robots. Club members program a laptop which drives the robot through a playing field to accomplish various tasks. In addition to programming Lego robots, the club also works on a research project. The current research project is about food safety, a topic unrelated to robotics. Caroline Bridgers guides the group through critical thinking as they formulate the project. The Blog enjoyed watching young girls and boys become Cheverly's future engineers.

I'll leave the bulk of this story to the real writers of ChvBlog, but it's important for the town residents to know what a great Administrator you have in David Warrington.

After reading a recent article by the Washington Times regarding the recently fired speed-camera operators, Optotraffic, I think we can all confidently say that Optotraffic's spokesman Mickey Shepard is full of feral cat litter, and David Warrington knows what he's talking about.

Having personally experienced incompetence at the hands of Optotraffic, I fully support the town's decision to boot them out on their ass, and hire someone else.

That being said, don't speed in Cheverly.

Ward One Safety Meeting Wednesday Night

This Wednesday, Nov. 9th at 7:00pm – Cheverly Police Station by Town Hall!
Please spread the word and plan to come out for our first ever Ward One Specific Safety Meeting with Cheverly Police Chief Buddy Robshaw and other members of our Cheverly Police Department. We will have the opportunity to learn and have a discussion on safety concerns, tailored to our Ward One geographic area.
We border the hospital, the BW Parkway, Rt. 202, and Cheverly Ave. Our Ward has special areas and issues of concern, including: speeding, the yet-to-be removed, National Park Service-owned homes, construction sites, vacant lots attractive for dumping, traffic management, and possible smoking/loitering of hospital employees on private and park land.
Please Come! Make sure to tell you neighbors. Bring your questions, suggestions and concerns. The Chief is making this time available just for us. Let’s make sure to make good use of this opportunity. If you need to bring your children, do so. I will be sure to have activities,coloring, stories, etc. for them. We need each and every one of us to be involved in order to keep all of us safe.

House Fire in Old Fourth Ward

A note from Dr. Joel Lang.

One of my best friends and a long-time resident and friend of Cheverly, Robin McClain, suffered a tragic house fire Monday morning. Fortunately, no one was injured but the house is largely destroyed on the inside and uninhabitable. She lives(ed) at 6007 State Street.

The house can be fixed, but much of her personal belongings were destroyed or damaged. Mostly, she and her sister need clothes to wear - women's size 12 (petit) - she can wear blue jeans and a blue top for work. Here sister needs size 2X-3X. Shoes sizes 8 or 9 would be good. She is a proud woman and is reluctant to ask for anything, but I am asking for her.
You can bring the clothes to my home or I can pick them up at your home.
As time goes by, her need for help from the community will change and I will keep everyone apprised of this. This is a great community and I know a lot of people will come together with help and support.

Series of Booms Taunt County Executive

Last night a series of two very loud booms rocked the town of Cheverly around 8:38 and 9:00 PM. By coincidence, Cheverly resident and County Executive Rushern Baker spoke at the Hoyer Montessori School located at 2300 Belleview Avenue from 7:35 to 8:45 PM, not more than 2/3 of a mile from the Smith Auto Recycling plant in Beaver Heights. Rushern's comments focused on the need to spend the County's energies inside the Beltway at transit-oriented sites (near Metro stations). One could almost assume the booms were timed to taunt the county to remove the source of the booms and clean up blighted areas inside the Beltway where this type of activity occurs. By the way, is the camera on top of the Chev-Tuxedo Fire Station still working?

Submit your favorite boom theory! Since the Halloween contest was a bust, the CHVBlog's next contest will be to see who has the most realistic theory on the source of the booms. Our current favorite theory is a secret laboratory is housed underneath Hospital Hill. Built by the military-industrial complex, the lab (known as Area 51 and 7/8) reverse engineers captured alien spacecraft. On occasion the space ships are given test runs out of a secret portal on the side of the hill. Of course we can't see them or detect them on radar due to their cloaking device, but we still can hear the booms as the craft reach hypersonic speeds.

No Winners in Halloween Contest

Although we saw many spooky houses on Halloween night, nobody bothered to vote for the 'Scariest House in Cheverly.' The CHVBlog team will make the sacrifice and drink the 6-pack of Samuel Adams 'Octoberfest' beer which was to be awarded for the first place prize. We were thinking of saving the beer for next year's prize but deemed the wait too long. Better luck next year.

New Bridge Completes Lower Beaverdam Creek Trail

The Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek finished the last bridge on the trail from the Cheverly Community Center to the historic Cheverly (Magruder) Spring. The trail begins at the basketball courts behind the community center and winds along the woods abutting Route 50 to finish near the southern end of Cheverly Avenue. Although the bridge may be the last structural element of the trail, maintenance is ongoing with the clearing of brush and the spreading of wood chips. FLBC is always looking for help with the trail and they meet on the last Saturday of the month. The next scheduled work party will be on Saturday, November 26th from 9AM - 12 Noon.

Little Ghouls and Goblins Fill the Community Center

It appeared to be chaos as miniature firemen, princesses, Ironmen, and other costumed characters roamed throughout the community center gym. Luckily Barbara Pejokovich and the other members of the Rec Council had everything under control. Craft tables were set up to keep the kids occupied while the parents had a chance to discuss which houses they would hit on Monday evening. Even though the parade was rained out, the kids still had a great time at the Halloween party.

Cheverly Community Market ends its regular season this Saturday at the Cheverly Community Center, 8:00am to noon. They also have two special seasonal Markets in November and December (visit their blog for details).

The weather forecasts for Saturday morning are sunny and cold, but it's a great opportunity to get out and support a truly local endevor. While there, get a compost bin, lawn & leaf bags, donate food and supplies to a local animal shelter (thanks, Daisies!) and visit with your friends and neighbors. Cheverly Community Market is a special part of our community, and there aren't that many more opportunities to take advantage of it this year.

The intersection of Parkway and Inwood Street at Gast Park is now the town's first 'traffic circle.' The original stop sign on Parkway has been moved further south and there is a new stop sign on Inwood right before you enter the circle. We hope this change from a barricade triangle to a barricade circle will help alleviate speeding through the intersection. If you get confused, just follow the white arrows on the pavement.

Spotlight: Cheverly Garden Club

This is the second of an occasional series in which the CHV Blog will showcase one of the town's organizations.

The Cheverly Garden Club was established in 1954 with Mrs. Helen Reed as the first president (Helen is now living in Rockville and she is still an active gardener). The goals of the Cheverly Garden Club are to encourage and advance the fine art of gardening and landscaping, the study of horticulture and conservation, and the beautification of our environs. The Garden Club currently meets at the Cheverly United Methodist Church in the Parlor Room on the third Monday of the month at 7PM. There is usually a garden-themed program in addition to the monthly business meeting. The Garden Club has taken recent field trips to Longwood Gardens, Rawlings Conservatory in Baltimore, and the National Wildlife Visitors Center. The club has an annual service project every June of delivering floral arrangements to shut-ins in Cheverly. The club also placed the Blue Star memorial at the southern end of Cheverly Avenue. The Blue Star memorial program was established to honor those citizens who have served, are serving, or will serve in our nation's armed forces. The memorial is named in honor of Dr. John T. Maloney, early Cheverly resident and first coroner for Prince George's County. The Blue Star memorial was the first one placed in Prince George's County and dedicates Cheverly Avenue as a nationally recognized Blue Star By-Way.

The New York Fried Chicken currently located at Rt. 450 and Cooper Lane will be moving into the old KFC at Landover Road and Kilmer Street, across from the new Aldi's. The Blog doesn't have a date yet for a grand opening, but a soon-to-be activated website for the restaurant can be found at www.nyfriedchicken.com . The current menu consists of the usual fried chicken and fish, BBQ ribs, shrimp, subs, and burgers. As a consolation they do serve Hershey's ice cream.

As you can see it was a 'rain gutter' regatta and winner of the speediest zucchini was awarded a pirate finger puppet as a prize. Thanks to Dermot O'Leary and crew for running the races and many thanks to the Market for this great idea to keep the little ones occupied.

The Cheverly Garden Club (57 years old), Green Infrastructure Plan, Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek, Progressive Cheverly's Environmental Committee, Cheverly Conservation Alliance, and the Cheverly Community Market - where does it end or does it? Tack one more onto the list. Cheverly's Sustainable Maryland Green Team is forming to help Cheverly seek certification as a sustainable community under the Sustainable Maryland program (www.sustainablemaryland.com). The program is free and open to all of Maryland's 157 municipalities. Similar to the LEED certification for buildings, the town has to accumulate 150 points for the initial bronze certification. Cheverly has a substantial lead compared to other municipalities as we already have many qualifying projects: local farmers market, wind energy project, community vegetable gardens, and a slew of others. The Blog will keep Cheverly posted when the town registers for the certification and the points begin to accumulate.

Cheverly's students (and a few parents) were out in force this morning at Legion Park for Bike-to-School Day. Students from Hoyer Montessori, Gladys Noon Spellman, and St. Ambrose Schools met at the Legion Park this morning (The Blog was surprised to see representatives from St. Ambrose because their school is closed today). After a few brief words regarding fitness and safety, the kids made their way by bike, skateboard and roller blades to their morning classes. Many thanks to those drivers for their patience if they were caught behind the procession either up Cheverly Avenue or down Forest Road.

Public Safety Day turnout light

Cheverly's finest were out in full force despite the light turnout this evening. They were joined by various departments including the Berwyn Heights Fire Department, Prince George's County Police and Special Operations and the US Park Police helicopter. A balloon artist and clown rounded out the evening's entertainment. Delicious food from 3 Brothers restaurant was served by a group of dedicated and friendly volunteers. All-in-all it was a pretty good event for those who made it tonight.

The Cheverly Vegetable Gardens scooped the Community Common Area award at the 41st Prince George's County Beautification Awards tonight. The awards ceremony was held at the Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville. Judging for the awards was done by the Landscape Design Consultants' Council of the National Capital Area Garden Clubs, Inc. If the CHV Gardens maintains their high standards for 4 more years they will earn the coveted 'Golden Trowel' award.

This is the first of an occasional series in which the CHV Blog will showcase one of the town's organizations.

The Cheverly Woman's Club has been in existence since 1919. Our original stated purpose is "To unite the women of Cheverly for their mutual benefit, and for the promotion of their common interests in educational, civic and moral measures".
It's amazing how close to that original purpose we remain. Today, in 2011, our main focus is on peace. In recent years we've sponsored the Peace Garden and Peace Pole at Pinkey's Park, celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the "Beloved Community" during Black History Month, have established the annual Month of Peace in May and the Cheverly Children's Summer Peace Camp.
Each year our progress expands towards creating a peaceful society in Cheverly and on earth.
Over the years we have made some substantial changes in our club to keep up with the times. For example, we stopped having regular monthly meetings a few years ago but kept up with our ongoing events. But we began to miss each other. So now, we've been meeting for dinner out and a brief meeting 3-4 times a year.
We partnered with a few other groups to continue our Holiday Secret Shop. The other groups did the major portion of the work and earned the profits.
Now that one of our focuses is raising money for tuitions for Peace Camp 2012, we're hoping to expand our involvement again. Definite plans are still in the works. If you happen to get this notice soon, you may see us back in the driver's seat in December. We're also talking about raffling baskets during this upcoming holiday season. Look for us at various community events.
We'd love to have you join us. We have meetings on an as-needed basis and low dues. We ask for help with activities and events to whatever extent you choose. Currently our calendar includes the Holiday Secret Shop (This year may become a Holiday Shop for Peace event.), a Black History Celebration at the Legion in February, Peace Month in May and Peace Camp in July.

In addition, the Berwyn Heights Fire Department will demonstrate a vehicle extraction. Bring the kids to this year’s celebration as it is aimed specifically at our younger residents.

According to Patty King, organizer extraordinaire, an incredible number and variety of items including, furniture, tools, yard equipment, bicycles, baby items, clothing for men, women and children, shoes, household goods, vacuum cleaners, dishes, paperback books, magazines, records, toys, jewelry, antiques, storage chests, lamps, mirrors, items for pets, doors, windows, lumber, box spring, headboards, games, both board and lawn, and lots, lots more. There will be home baked goods for sale and to order. Civic groups including Friends of Lower Beavercreek Dam, local babysitters, school representatives, etc will be there- and hopefully you as well!

I should clarify -- it's the pajamas. Not the kid! Can you do something to help out with the St. Ambrose Fall Festival? Here's a simple way to lend a hand...

During the St. Ambrose School Fall Festival on September 24, there will be a craft where the kids will be able to make scarecrow babies. For this activity, the organizers need baby clothes (from newborn to 24 months) that will be stuffed with straw. In particular, they need the one-piece outfits with the feet in them, like the ones shown in the photo at left. (Incidentally, the child in this photo is now nearly 11!) These clothes should definitely be old clothes that are in reasonable shape since they will be used for a craft activity.

All clothes need to be donated on Thursday, September 23 between 6:30 and 9:00pm at Fannon Hall (underneath St. Ambrose Church). Remember, these clothes aren't not going to needy families, but for a craft activity, so the clothes just need to be clean and useable. If there are more clothes donated than are used, the festival organizers will identify a charity or shelter where useable items can be sent.

The annual SIDS Charity Run/Walk is on Saturday (instead of Sunday), September 10. This is the first year this event will be on a Saturday. A new addition is a 5 K Run/Race around Buddy Attick Park lake, for which registration will start at 7 am at St. Hugh's Church parking lot, 135 Crescent Road, Greenbelt. A short (approximately 100 yard) Kids' Fun Run for ages 9 and under starts at 7:45 at St. Hugh's, and the start time for the 5 K Run for ages 10 and up is 8 am. The 5 K Run/Race will be timed by our partner, the Prince George's Running Club. (We greatly appreciate the support of the Prince George's Running Club in helping make this charity Race possible.) In addition to the 5 K Run/Race (for ages 10-99) and the Kids’ Fun Run, there will be the usual Walk around the lake. To facilitate parking, registration for the Walk will start at 8 am at the entrance to Buddy Attick Park (Greenbelt Lake) at 555 Crescent Road. Walkers can start walking anytime between 9 am and noon.

Hey, we said please! There are newly painted red curbs on Jason and Josyln Streets in the vicinity of 63rd Avenue, some of them abutting existing yellow curbs. In most jurisdictions a red curb means 'fire lane' as a blue curb would indicate a handicapped parking space. We are a little perplexed why a yellow curb couldn't do the job as well the red one and hope the town explains the difference soon. In the mean time we suggest the town stencils a skull and crossed bones or a grim reaper on the red curb so people know they really mean business.

Note: The Blog was informed by Chief Robshaw the red curbs indicate areas within 25 feet of an intersection. Vehichles parked within this distance are in violation of the town code. Rather than having to measure for a potential violation, the curb marking accurately identifies such a violation. Thanks for the quick response Chief!

Flash flood warning!

The perennial Rt. 50/Tuxedo Road low spot was once again flooded today. Inbound Route 50 was down to a crawl and only the brave managed to traverse the high waters on Tuxedo Road. Lower Beaverdam Creek by the Cheverly Metro was also at flood stage. Please be careful and use alternate routes if possible. Also REMEMBER to use your headlights when it is raining. About half of the drivers out there don't and it really makes a difference!

A seasonal handbell choir is forming at the Cheverly United Methodist Church. Membership is open to adults and teens 7th grade and up. You do not need to be a CUMC member to participate. Choir practice will be on Wednesday evening from 6:45 - 7:45 PM at CUMC, beginning in September and continuing through the holiday season. The choir will perform at some CUMC services and they are exploring other local holiday events for performance opportunities. There are still several isolated streets without power on the east side of town. Several residents have reported that Pepco has told them they have power when in fact they do not! There are rumors that the power will not be restored until 9/1 by 7pm.

Town of Cheverly Prepares for Irene

Just got this email from the town...

The tropical storm watch for the D.C. and Baltimore areas has been upgraded to a tropical storm warning as Hurricane Irene moves north. The tropical storm warning includes the tidal Potomac and the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay.

A Hurricane warning is in effect for the Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware beaches all the way up through the New Jersey shore and the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. A Flash Flood Watch has also been issued for the metro region Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.

Cheverly Police will be on duty throughout the storm and will be reporting major issues with travel routes to the Cheverly Public Works Department.

Aldi's - still on schedule?

The demolition contractor for Aldi's is working at a feverish pace (note the dump truck inside the shell of the old Giant ). Everyone in Cheverly is looking forward to the grand opening of the new Aldi's. We hope they will make their October 27th deadline, but don't bet the farm on it.

Cheverly tree canopy shrinks by one

Today a mature white oak was cut down in front of the Cheverly community center. The tree had a few dead limbs but plenty of healthy, green leaves remaining in the canopy. Upon further inspection the stump was more than halfway rotted and presented a safety hazard to those attending the community markets and future Cheverly Days. Actually the timing was very good considering the possibility of hurricane Irene heading up the Eastern seaboard and turning inland up the Chesapeake Bay. No doubt the Public Works Department will be planting another tree soon to take its place.

New Church in Town

All are cordially invited to the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony on Saturday, August 27th at 1:00 PM. Officiating at the ceremony will be the Right Reverend John Bryson Chane, Bishop of Washington. Speed humps on Crest Avenue

Two new speed humps have been placed on Crest Avenue. Residents have seen drivers race down Crest at more than three times the town's speed limit. The speed humps will slow down those who are chronically late for work and use Crest as a bypass around the Cheverly Avenue/Tuxedo Road intersection. We just hope those drivers don't use 59th Avenue or other Cheverly streets instead.

The class is $50.00 for non-CPRC members and $40.00 for CPRC-members since we are subsidizing part of the cost for members. All participants will be provided with pizza and beverages. Upon completion participants will be certified in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR.

A few weeks ago, a few people on the Cheverly Exchange email list got riled up.

It all started with a resident of Cheverly complaining about speeding around Cheese Park, and it went something like this.

R1: Speeders almost hit me and my children because they were speeding at 100 miles an hour around the park! This is the fault of Cheverly!
R2: Yes, all speeding in Town must stop, or we'll behead those that speed!
R3: If you don't like speeders in Town, then don't take your kids to the park!
R1 & R2: Arrrggghhhh, WE HATE YOU!

Etc.

So, after a few days of invective, wailing and gnashing of teeth, the issue finally settled down, but not before Town Officials promised action.

Their action was seen today down by Cheese Park, a few taut cables stretched across the street, to measure the speed and quantity of the cars that pass by. We'll be sure to stand by and wait for the results of the measurements.

As in the past 2 years, the self-produced ChvProm was a smashing success. Tickets were sold out over 3 weeks prior to the event, and the Cheverly gym was bursting with great food, great music, and great people.

Congratulations to Dave and Casey Kneipp for their 1st place finish in the table decorating contest.

Thanks to everyone on the ChvProm Committee for their work and effort to help make this happen, and thanks to the Town of Cheverly for their support!

Of course, we're pretty sure that Rushern spends most evenings here in Cheverly, but we saw him twice at public events this week. He attended part of the Town Meeting on Thursday night, seen in the picture above, and again in the Cheverly Day Parade on Saturday.

New Council Sworn In

This past Thursday, the newest Cheverly Town Council was sworn in, including 3 new members to the Council. Ward 2, Ward 4, and Ward 6 all received new representation. Mayor Mike Callahan oversaw the proceedings, and also thanked all outgoing Councilmembers for their service, including the 16 years on the Council served by Lee Schachter.

Hyattsville Gets Hip

Or at least hipper than than they were.

The EYA development on Route 1 in Hyattsville is finally seeing additional retail open, including an Elevation Burger and a frozen yogurt shop.

EB turns out a nice choice of burgers (and veggie burgers) all of which is from grass fed beef, and made in the least environmentally impactful way possible. For a "fast-food" type experience, it's a tad on the pricey side, with a burger, fries, and drink tapping your wallet for about $9.50.

The self-serve fro-yo shop next door is a bit of a better deal, selling off their frozen concoctions f0r $.45 a pound, meaning that a reasonable serving of Tango Mango yogurt will only set you back $1.80.

Street parking seems to be plentiful (for now) so be sure to check out these new additions to the neighborhood.

Stop speeding in town, because the citizens that inhabit the Cheverly Exchange are getting restless, and you're apt to end up in a spike pit, or some other hidden danger that may lay in wait for you. You should be especially slow around Cheese Park, since there are actual children that play there, and their parents are riled up.

In fact, if one of our readers happens to get a photo of a car that constantly speeds around town, we'd be happy to publish it here, just to pass on a readers photo.

Before the polls had even closed on election day, we spotted part of the Ward 1 campaign crew out cleaning up yard signs, and de-cluttering the streets of Cheverly. We must say that we're impressed with this early effort, and wish that state delegates would do the same thing during their election cycles.

Truck Touch this Weekend!

Cheverly Truck Touch Thunders into Town on Saturday, May 7

On Saturday, May 7, at the 14th Annual Cheverly Truck Touch, children can sit in the driver's seat of a cement truck, honk the horn of a dump truck, run around inside the trailer of an 18 wheeler, check out a race car, turn on the siren of a police car, put on a fire hat and "drive" a fire truck, and SO MUCH MORE! More than 20 vehicles will be at the Cheverly Truck Touch this year and children can get inside and hands on with every single one of them!

There will also be a small ride-on train, games geared just for little ones, face painting, and yummy hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, baked goods, balloons and adorable t-shirts for sale.

Admission is just $5 for ages 1-12 (under 1 and over 12 are free!) and includes 4 game tickets (additional game tickets are for sale at just $5 for 20!).

The Cheverly Truck Touch is a fundraiser for the non-profit Cheverly Nursery Schools.

We'll have a family movie playing from 5:30 to 7:00 (which both kids and adults can enjoy).

Chili will be all you can eat and kids (12 and under) are $3 and adults are $7.00.

From 700PM to 1000PM, we'll enjoy some American rock, ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Bon Jovi, and the chili will continue to be available along with some ice-cold patriotic Sam Adams beer (along with traditional beers and sodas).

We also will be shooting darts and playing pool.

With the construction on Cheverly Ave in only it's 4th day, the people in traffic on Belleview Ave seem to be getting more and more annoyed. We can only imagine what it must be like for the residents on Belleview Ave, subjected to this onslaught of traffic and noise.

What seems to be worse than the traffic on Belleview Ave are the trenches that stretch across Cheverly Ave. They have become effective speed-bumps, as no one dares to traverse them at more than a crawl for fear of bending a rim, or destroying a tire.
