When the first thunderstorm swept through the DC area today at around 3:30pm, most of Cheverly lost power. Still now, at nearly 10pm, large swaths of Cheverly are still dark. With repeated heavy rainshowers, accompanied by frequent lightening, these storms have played havoc with our town.
During several forays out into the night, we saw rivers of water flowing down streets, along with many broken limbs, and trees cleaved in half. On two occasions, transformers or electrical lines set off an explosive show of green lights between Crest and Lake on the west side of town, resulting in a visit from the fire department as seen in the photo.

I hope everyone is doing OK and didn't suffer from any fallen trees. Fortunately for us we survived the night with no real damage and (so far) no flooding.
Thanks to the folks at Fratelli's for cooking us a nice hot dinner while we were without power. (It came back on around 9:30.)
I was glad the power came back on this morning at 6am so that I didn't have to get ready for work in the dark. (valleyway)
Geesh, this weather is getting redonk! Was very happy when the power came back on later in the evening. I don't know if this is a good thing, but when the traffic signals are out at the entrance to Cheverly at 202, then I know I have no power. Advance warning I guess.
I never lost power until just after 8 pm, and it was out for only about 40 min. Yea, East side!
I hope everyone's basements, trees, roofs, etc. are ok!
The TV news said 1 1/2 inches of rain at Reagan...I emptied my rain gauge twice yesterday for a total of 5" of rain! No wonder there was water gushing out of the sewers! If only the gypsy moth caterpillers would drown!
5 inches, wow. Absurd rain amounts have become the norm, at least for as long as we've lived in Cheverly. Anybody know why official rainfall totals are always so far below the actual totals we all experience? other than the obvious conspiracy theories, of course...
I think the Lindbergh baby has something to do with it. And did you know? Cheverly is actually Area 51...
Cheverly...area 51?? I felt the affinity right off.
Weathermen don't actually go outside and check they weather...just a guessing game...funny how everyone falls for the biggest hoax of all, global warming or is it climate change...whatever they are calling it now, they can't predict the weather when it is happening so why believe they could...oh whatever...
Mars, Jupiter, Triton, Neptune, Pluto are all experiencing "climate change". Hmmm.....could it be the sun or is the evil USA secretly dumping Co2 on these planets & moons???
Power at the last clump of my houses on 63rd Ave near Spellman (my house included) just came back on as of 645 this morning (Friday). Come to find out Pepc tells me that my street is on a different transformer from the rest of the neighborhood. You west-siders are lucky!! :-)
Cheers,
Brian
East side, West side, sounds like it was patchy outages all over. Well, if it's any consolation our power never went out but our AC isn't working. Seems like a good compromise. I like the middle ground.
